The Palos Verdes Symphonic Band will present Long Ago and Far Away: A Musical Odyssey on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at 3 PM at the Norris Theatre, 27570 Norris Center Drive, Rolling Hills Estates 90274 (www.palosverdesperformingarts.com, 310-544-0403).

The program will consist of music that evokes distant places and times gone by. Featured will be three movements of Johan de Meij’s masterwork Symphony No.1, Lord of the Rings, based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. Its central theme is the fight for ownership of the One Ring, forged by primaeval forces, the fate of which decides the safety or destruction of the World. Other selections include compositions by Richard Wagner, Camille Saint-Saens, and Edward Elgar.

The Palos Verdes Symphonic Band, under the direction of Christine Hayes, consists of 60 local musicians dedicated since 1962 to bringing the very best in concert band music to the South Bay community.
